I now have Minecraft running in Java with an Xbox wireless controller and when Java edition isn’t running, the controller works perfectly in bedrock. It’s fun if you want to use your controller as a mouse, not so much for Minecraft. The steam controller companion, for me, was a waste of money and time. When you’re told to launch the new one you made, you need to switch back to the PLAY and then pick It from the drop down below the big image to the left of the green PLAY button. After that it was a little confusing but followable. Instead, click on Installations > New Installation. One of the first things you have to do is click on Launch Options. The one hugely confusing thing is the Minecraft launcher window is now different.

What do I need to install / buy? I see this question a lot and no clear answers that’s work later than 2015-2016. The goal is to just get the Xbox controller to work in Java edition exactly like it does in bedrock edition, and be able to use it for either one. I then tried getting it into steam, but the controller config isn’t complete or I don’t know what to bind where (like the dpad). A huge downside is that even if I can get it connected, it makes the controller unusable with bedrock because it’s now basically a giant mouse at all times when not on Java right? Boy steam, you really could make the process of giving you money and installing stuff simpler. Doesn’t seem to link to the Java edition even trying a few configs from the workshop. I’ve tried the steam controller companion app and it doesn’t work even with bindings. We have both Java edition and bedrock on the computer. But he’s young and wants to play with the Xbox controller.
